Originally Manhattan Beach was part of a ten mile ocean frontage of the Rancho Sausal Redondo, and was called ‘Shore Acres’ for a brief time. The name of Manhattan came to be when the two major owners of property in 1901 flipped a coin to get the name. The same year the first downtown building was put up and eventually became city offices. The city was incorporated in December of 1912. The pier we have today was originally dedicated in 1920.It is listed as a registered national landmark. After World War II many soldiers who were stationed in the L.A. area during the war, came back here to raise their families. The first large group of homes were built in the eastern part of the city due to the huge influx of people then, and also for the employment opportunities that came soon after when the defense and aerospace industries settled in the South Bay. Those original neighborhoods are Liberty Village and Manhattan Heights. Manhattan Village is a gated community with luxurious townhomes and estate homes. The community has its own park, pool, soccer field and 9 hole golfing, plus other great amenities. This is strictly family and children oriented with a great lifestyle.
Today, Manhattan Beach is known for its very exclusive and expensive homes along the beachfront. This area is called The Strand, and all the homes in this section face the beach.
