Manhattan Beach offers housing options from multi-million dollar mansions on the world famous "Strand" to wonderful cottages on tree lined streets, to beautiful newer town homes in a gated community called Manhattan Village:
**The Strand Neighborhood or Section.
This is the area along the beach front that has the big expensive water front homes. Many of the older homes on the beach are disappearing fast and being replaced by much larger and expensive beach homes. Most of the homes in this section are on small lots, usually 30x90. The vacant lots along the strand are few and far between, but when they do go on the market, they are very expensive and are gone overnight; bought up by local developers and builders usually for cash. The name 'strand' comes from the walk path or bike path that follows along the beaches from Marina Del Rey, going south through Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach and Torrance Beach. The 'strand' almost reaches the rocky cliffs of the Palos Verdes Peninsula where you can look across to Catalina Island 26 miles away.
The 'Strand Section' includes about 4-5 blocks east of the beach and has many of the older original small cottages and homes that are on what is called 'walk streets'. The 'walk streets' are located right behind the beach front homes, with streets running east to west. These are not streets in the sense that we usually think of, but are very wide sidewalks for the public to be able to access the beaches. Auto access to and from these 'walk street' homes, are in the alley type streets which run behind the homes. The auto access alley-streets are actually the 'walk streets' and are usually crowded and are for the use of the homeowners or dwellers that live in the homes along the 'walk streets'. All of the real estate along The Strand Section is expensive, whether along the beach front or on the 'walk streets', and is highly sought after by those who know this community and value of owning beach property here. Just about all of the old original homes located on the beach are gone now, having been torn down and replaced with multi million dollar estate size homes. Automobile access for the beach front homes is Bayview Drive which runs parallel to the beach and right behind the beachfront homes, with some parking spots, but not many. The garages for the beachfront homes open on to Bayview Drive. Today, in the Strand Neighborhood or Section, you can find many 'Strand' beachfront homes for sale in the Manhattan Beach real estate listings and at upper end price ranges. Typical beachfront homes that go on the market will be priced in the Manhattan Beach real estate listings up to as high as $12-15M or more. Many buyers await these homes to hit the MLS Listings and are prepared to pay cash for the beachfront property that they want for their family.
